Mark Twain once famously said that Benjamin Disraeli said, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

This is our attempt to turn the tables and do our best to tell a few truths.

As part of our Colloquium class, we have picked a few “truths” that we believe are not being told very well right now. We present them here in accordance with a few important guidelines:

  • To whatever degree is possible, our truths are grounded in data. And as we present the data we will provide a context for how it was gathered and what was the intention of the person or persons who gathered it.
  • We will not “preach to the choir.” In addition to providing the support that we personally find compelling, we will listen to arguments on the other side and engage with them meaningfully.
  • Each of these posts will provide avenues for discovering more about the topic of interest so that readers can judge for themselves whether we have represented the issue fairly.
